Meditation Instruction: Developing a Calm and Tranquil Mind

Meditation Instruction: Developing a Calm and Tranquil Mind

Most living beings seek mental happiness and want to eliminate suffering, but just wishing will not bring this about. We may even create the opposite. So we must search for the cause of suffering and the cause of happiness. The afflictions are the cause of samsara, of all mental discomfort and suffering. The remedy is meditation. – HH Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje

First Light Ceremony January 1st 2021

“Every year at sunrise on January 1, Kagyu monasteries and dharma centers gather together to light lamps, recite prayers of lamp offering and dedicate themselves to peace – in their own lives, homes and the world. As the “home” of the First Light observance, KTD has been lighting 108 lamps for world peace every day since Jan. 1, 2000. Join us for our special prayers in front of our beautiful Buddha shrine, and make aspirations for yourself, your family and friends, and the world.”

“Compassion is not something to keep locked inside yourself. It is something to express in action. This compassion must persist beyond the thought, “If only their suffering would come to an end.” If we focus too long on wishing for something that we never pursue and that never happens, we run the risk of falling into a depression ourselves. When compassion arises, it is the time to act.” ― -H.H. 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje , Interconnected: Embracing Life in Our Global Society

April 2019 News and Events

“When you feel authentic love toward others, you will be deeply moved to act. You will not rest until you have found ways to secure the happiness of all those you are able to include in your feelings of love. As you learn to love more and more widely, your love will motivate you to act to benefit not just the few people in your inner circle, but your whole society, and eventually, the whole world. This makes love an immensely powerful basis for social action of any sort.”

Loving Kindness and Compassion: Webcast with Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche April 12-14

LKCKKR

Loving-kindness and compassion play such an important role in the Buddhist approach to spirituality that we can say that a genuine practice of the dharma is actually based on the development of these qualities. The teachings always emphasize that, unless we practice and integrate these qualities into our everyday lives, it will be utterly impossible to attain enlightenment and liberation. Please join us in receiving this precious teaching from our beloved teacher. Lama Yeshe Gyamtso will be translating.
Born in eastern Tibet in 1924, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche is one of the great masters of the Karma Kagyu lineage and Tibetan Buddhism. Khenpo Rinpoche, who received most of his training and education in Tibet before the Chinese invasion, is highly accomplished in meditation, philosophy, and all monastic arts. As abbot of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Monastery (KTD) in Woodstock, New York; spiritual guide of thirty-five Karma Thegsum Choling (KTC) affiliate centers; and retreat master at the Karme Ling Retreat Center in Delhi, New York; Rinpoche has touched the hearts and minds of many thousands of students.

First Light Ceremony and Lamp Offering for World Peace

First Light
FIRST LIGHT CEREMONY AND LAMP OFFERING FOR WORLD PEACE NEW YEARS DAY JANUARY 1ST 10:30AM On January 1, 2019 Karma Thegsum Choling will continue the First Light tradition that began in 2000 with the aspiration of bringing peace into our daily lives and to the world. Part of His Holiness Karmapas’ activity is to point the way to living a life of love and compassion, to teach us to protect our environment and to provide the light of wisdom. Lamp offerings have special meaning in this regard: shining the light on our inner wisdom and reminding us of the clear path to living each day to create a life of peace. We invite you to light your lamps of peace — to join in our offering and prayers to help the light of wisdom reach all corners of the world. Join us for the 20th year of celebrating First Light with KTD Monastery, other KTC Centers, and Buddhist communities around the world. Let us together make aspirations, dedications, offerings, and prayers for World Peace and happiness to reach all corners of the world. We will chant the traditional Tibetan Buddhist prayers of the Amitabha sadhana, followed by a lamp offering ceremony dedicated to those we may wish to remember who have passed away, those who are ill, and all beings who may suffer. Each participant will have the opportunity to light a candle for his or her own loved ones, make aspirations, or offer prayers.
firstlight
First Light is also an auspicious occasion to renew our commitment to practice for the benefit of all sentient beings & to make offerings to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as represented by our shrine. Making offerings to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is considered highly meritorious and an effective way of removing obstacles. Participants are encouraged to bring individual offerings: particularly flowers, fruit, sweets, baked treats, or monetary offerings. This too is considered especially meritorious. We ask that those bringing offerings please try to arrive around 9:30 amin order for offerings to be placed and the shrine properly prepared by volunteer shrinekeepers. Following the ceremony we will hold a vegetarian potluck luncheon to which all are welcome. Please feel free to bring a vegetarian dish of your choice. You do not have to be Buddhist to attend. We welcome all interested in learning more about Buddhism.
